Fascinating Facts About Sex-1

Weight loss
Fascinating Fact: Sexual acts lead to weight loss

The average human loses 26 calories when kissing for a minute. Furthermore, vigorous sex for half an hour burns 150 calories (you can lose three pounds in a year – if you have sex 7 to 8 times a month). Kissing is also very good for your teeth: the extra saliva released during the act helps to keep the mouth clean – reducing the risk of decay.

Pubic Wigs
Fascinating Fact: In Victorian times, whores wore pubic wigs

The pubic wig (merkin) has been around since the 1400s when it was originally worn by women who had shaved their pubic hair off to prevent lice. In the Victorian times it was frequently worn by prostitutes who wanted to conceal the fact that they had diseases like syphilis (Honest – we aren’t merkin’ this up). They are also used in the film industry to conceal actors genitals in nude scenes.

Condoms
Fascinating Fact: Condoms were originally made of animal intestines or linen

In Asia before the fifteenth century, some use of glans condoms (devices covering only the head of the penis) is recorded. In China, glans condoms may have been made of oiled silk paper, or of lamb intestines. In Japan, they were made of tortoise shell or animal horn (ouch). In the 16th century, condoms were often made with linen sheaths soaked in a chemical solution and allowed to dry before use. The cloths were sized to cover the glans of the penis, and were held on with a ribbon. Pictured above is an animal intestine condom from the early 1900s.

Fascinating Fact: Sex cures headaches

Next time your significant other refuses your advances by claiming to have a headache, remember this fact: the sex act can help to cure a headache. Sex causes the body to release endorphins which naturally reduce the pain of a headache.

Cool Cap Takes India Home

A supremely calm MS Dhoni guided India to victory, with two balls to spare, over a sluggish Australia in the ODI at Adelaide Oval.

Dhoni's composure was best measured by how he paced his innings. It bordered on the statuesque early, before he raised tempo with swift running between the wickets. He saved his one stroke to the boundary - a towering six over long on - for when he most needed it: the third ball of the final over delivered by Clint McKay, which began with 13 still required.

The next ball was a high full toss that Dhoni swung to deep midwicket, but the no-ball - called for height - gifted India a third run in addition to the two scampered between the wickets. The next delivery was helped around to backward square leg, and the final three runs were collected to take India alongside Australia on two wins from three matches.

India's chase was anchored by Gautam Gambhir's fluent 92, before Dhoni and Suresh Raina took the visitors close with a stand of 61. Raina perished in the 47th over and Ravindra Jadeja followed in the 49th, but Dhoni remained to collar the remaining runs. Test match difficulties notwithstanding, he remains the master technician in limited-overs matches.

Australia's fielding display was its least attentive of the Michael Clarke era. Only one catch of note went down but outfield fumbles were legion, and both Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja could have been run-out in the closing stages had in-fielders held their nerve.

Of even greater concern was an apparent hamstring twinge for Michael Clarke, who was running gingerly from the innings' midpoint and hobbling noticeably by the end, having left the field briefly for treatment. Clarke may now be due a spell of rest after an unbroken sequence of Tests and ODIs dating back to his first tour as captain - to Bangladesh in April 2011.

Until the final over, McKay provided the most lasting threat for the home attack, maintaining a disciplined line and changing his pace, while Xavier Doherty bowled some particularly nagging deliveries at the death to make India work for the points.

Looking very much at home in international company, the debutant Peter Forrest had built Australia's total alongside David Hussey after the innings was in danger of stalling at 3 for 81. Clarke's fluent 38 had ended when he sallied forth to attack Umesh Yadav and dragged a slower ball wretchedly onto the stumps.

Forrest was strong square of the wicket and down the ground, while Hussey's innings was another reminder of his usefulness in most limited-overs contests. Following their departure, allrounder Daniel Christian put together a handy closing contribution at the home ground of his adopted state. Few boundaries were collected in the closing overs, reflecting some diligent bowling but also the slowing of an otherwise friendly batting surface.

Yadav and Zaheer Khan were the most effective of India's bowlers, attacking the stumps while also keeping the runs down, as the tourists sought a manageable target after the selectors chose to rest Sachin Tendulkar.

Smart stats
India's victory meant that it is the highest successful chase by them in ODIs in Australia. Their previous highest was the target of 260 they chased down against New Zealand in Brisbane in 1986. It is also the joint fifth-highest chase by any team against Australia in ODIs in Australia. The win is also India's first against Australia in five matches in Adelaide.
Gautam Gambhir's 92 is the fifth instance of an India batsman being dismissed in the nineties against Australia in ODIs in Australia. It is also Gambhir's second-highest score against Australia after the 113 he made in Sydney in 2008.
Peter Forrest became the 11th Australia player overall and the second in this series after Matthew Wade to make a fifty-plus score on ODI debut. No Australia batsman has scored a century on ODI debut.
The 98-run stand between David Hussey and Forrest is the seventh-highest fourth-wicket stand for Australia against India and their highest against India in Adelaide.
Hussey's 72 is his second-highest score in ODIs and his eighth half-century. It is also his highest score against India, surpassing the 61 he made in the first match between the two teams in this series in Melbourne.
Australia's total of 269 is their second-highest against India in Adelaide, after the 329 they made in 2000.
Ryan Harris and Mitchell Starc had found some bounce but no great pace and negligible movement when they shared the new ball, allowing Virender Sehwag and Gambhir the chance to play with freedom as they regularly pierced the offside field.

Clarke's brow was looking furrowed as the 50 was raised inside nine overs, but his introduction of McKay brought immediate results when Sehwag's leading edge to a nondescript delivery looped to point.

Gambhir and Kohli accumulated, albeit at a lesser pace, until the younger batsman tried to lace McKay over the offside field and offered a steepling chance to Forrest. Rohit Sharma's entry to the crease coincided with the introduction of spin, but after a period of thrust and parry the quicks returned.

Rohit's first response was to lash Starc over square leg for a glorious flat six, and next over he managed a cut that scorched to the fence from Christian. However some tension clearly remained in Rohit's arms, and he perished in trying to force Harris over the in-field.

Gambhir survived a chance on 88, David Warner shelling a sharp drive at short cover, but on 92 he was the victim of an lbw decision when all logic - and subsequent replays - suggested that McKay's delivery had pitched outside leg stump.

The duo of wickets forced Dhoni and Raina into salvage mode, trying to stabilise the innings even as the required-rate slithered up towards eight per over. They were helped by a series of misfields, uncharacteristic by the hosts' standards this summer.

Gradually a few boundaries closed the gap between runs and balls, Raina depositing Xavier Doherty into the crowd wide of long on. Thirty-one were required from the final four overs when Raina played over a delivery by Doherty to be bowled, leaving the stage to Dhoni.

Earlier in the day, the selectors rested Michael Hussey to give Forrest a first cap and dropped Matthew Wade down the order, shifting Ricky Ponting to the top, but neither he nor Warner had a significant impact on proceedings.

Upon winning the toss, Clarke had no hesitation batting first for the third time in as many matches in this series, but Ponting and Warner made a sluggish start against Zaheer and Vinay Kumar. Reaching out for the ball rather than letting it come to him, Ponting miscued a drive to point.

A horrid running mix-up resulted in Warner being stranded as Vinay collected Rohit's agile field-and-throw to the non-striker's end. Forrest and Clarke recalibrated somewhat before the debutant signalled his capabilities with a rasping cut from Yadav, followed by a crisp swing off Jadeja down the ground for six.

Clarke had lost some of his earlier momentum, and Yadav capitalised when his change of pace met a highly ambitious attempt to reach the boundary, leaving Hussey and Forrest to rebuild again. They did so with wisely-chosen shots - Forrest clattered a second six down the ground off the bowling of Rohit - and eager running between the wickets, lifting the hosts to 179 before Forrest presented a catch to deep midwicket.

Hussey went on in the company of Christian, scoring mainly in an efficient series of ones and twos, and looked ready to unfurl his cleanest hitting when Virender Sehwag dived smartly to hold a low chance at square leg. Christian accumulated neatly until he was heedlessly run out, and 57 from the final 10 overs proved inadequate as Dhoni held his nerve.

Killing girl was 'enjoyable', teen murderer writes in her diary

Diary entries made by teenage murderer Alyssa Bustamente in which she described her pleasure at killing her nine-year-old neighbour Elizabeth Olten have been read to a shocked courtroom.
Alyssa Bustamante (left) was 15 years old when she repeatedly stabbed Elizabeth Olten (right) to death

Alyssa Bustamante was 15 years old when she repeatedly stabbed Elizabeth Olten to death before calmly writing about the "pretty enjoyable" murder in her journal.
While a search was launched for the missing girl in the small town of St Martins, Missouri, Bustamante then went off to a youth dance at her church.
Elizabeth's parents wept as the diary entry, which the killer later attempted to scribble out, was read to the court by a hand-writing expert during a hearing to decide her sentence.
"I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead," the entry read.
"I don't know how to feel atm [at the moment]. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable.
"I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol [laugh out loud]."
Elizabeth's body was found under a pile of leaves in woods behind Bustamante's home.
Bustamante is being sentenced as an adult for the crime after confessing to second degree murder and armed criminal actions. She told officers she committed the murder "to know what it felt like".
In another diary entry read to the court, written a week before the murder, Bustamante complained that her mobile phone had ran out of battery, meaning that she could not tell her friends about her feelings of anger and frustration.
"If I don't talk about it, I bottle it up, and when I explode someone's going to die," she wrote.
On her YouTube page, she listed "killing people" among her hobbies.
Prosecutors have said that the evidence shows that Bustamante pre-meditated the crime - digging a hole in her garden, which was apparently intended as a grave; and encouraging her younger sister to ask Elizabeth over to their grandmother's house to play.
Weeping as she described how she had told the nine-year-old to return home in time for dinner at 6pm, Elizabeth's mother Patty Preiss pleaded with Cole County Circuit Judge Pat Joyce to give the killer the maximum sentence.
"So much has been lost at the hands of this evil monster," Mrs Preiss said. "Elizabeth was given a death sentence, and we were given a life sentence."
Cook County Circuit Court heard that she had a history of depression and self-harming, and had once attempted suicide by overdosing on pain killers and carving the word "hate" into her arm.
Bustamante was being raised by her grandmother and legal guardian, Karen Brooke, at the time of the killing after being abandoned by her drug addict mother and father, who is serving time in jail.
Asked during the hearing if her granddaughter appeared different on the evening of the murder, Mrs Brooke said that she seemed happier.
Bustamante's lawyers suggested that an increased dose of the antidepressant Prozac, which the teenager had been proscribed to help with her mood swings, may have contributed to the 2009 crime.
They are fighting for the teenager, who recently turned 18, to be given only 10 years in jail, rather than the maximum life sentence.
The hearing continues.

US teen killer in 'amazing' murder sentenced to life

The teenage girl who confessed in her diary to "enjoying" the murder of her nine-year-old neighbour has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Alyssa Busatamante had pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Elizabeth Olten in the small town of St Martins, Missouri, when she was 15-years-old. She strangled and stabbed the little girl before burying her under a pile of leaves.
Alyssa Bustamante (left) was 15 years old when she repeatedly stabbed Elizabeth Olten (right) to death
The plea on lesser charges spared her a first-degree murder trial, which would have left her liable to a life sentence without the chance of release.
At a sentencing hearing, her lawyers had argued that the fact that she was taking high doses of Prozac at the time of the 2009 crime meant that she was more prone to violence and so should serve only 10 years in jail.
However, following tearful testimony by Elizabeth's mother Patty Preiss, who called Bustamante a "monster," a judge at Cook County Circuit Court ruled she should serve a life sentence plus 30 years for armed criminal action.
Before sentencing, the teen, now 18, apologised to her victim's family. "If I could give my life to bring her back I would – I'm sorry," she said.

15-year-old boy stabs teacher to death in Chennai classroom

A class 9 boy of St Mary's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School stabbed his teacher to death in a classroom on Thursday morning. He later told police that he was angry at her for scolding him.

Shock and fear gripped the school on Armenian Street in Parrys as 15-year-old boy, son of a daily labourer, repeatedly stabbed his science teacher Uma Maheswari (42) in the neck and face. Maheswari was sitting in another class on the first floor of a three-storey school building when the boy stormed in with a knife around 10.30am.

"He stabbed her first in the neck," said an eyewitness, "and inflicted cut injuries again on her cheek and neck. She died on the spot." When the other students cried out loud, he threatened them and ran out, but was caught by teachers and students, the witness said. He was handed over to police.

"The boy came with a knife wrapped in a paper," a policeman investigating the case said. "He said he was angry because the teacher scolded him. We don't know yet if there is any other reason."

His schoolmates said he was not an aggressive child, but was quite aloof. "He never used to mingle with others," a student said.

VALENTINE'S DAY SPECIAL-2

5 QUESTIONS MEN SHOULD'NT ASK WOMEN
Let’s face it, women have the ability to read much more into a question than is meant.
For instance, a guy asks what the time is, and she hears, “I’m bored, I want to leave, I wonder if this relationship is working for me, I think I may be able to escape in the next few minutes, I wonder what I am doing here?” He wanted to know what the time was, because he needs to take his tablet an hour after supper.
So what do the following questions mean to women?
Are you going to be much longer?
She hears : Here I am sitting on my backside waiting in the car, while you are packing the baby’s bag, sorting out the dog, wrapping the birthday present, dealing with YOUR mother’s phonecall, setting the alarm and locking the house. What is taking you so long?
Why does this question irritate women?
This question merely reveals your husband/boyfriend’s complete lack of understanding about what it takes to get ready to go on the road. And this is what makes women angry. Leave it to the man in your life, and you will arrive at the party without a present, without clean nappies for the baby, and to top it all, a call from the alarm company, saying the armed response says the dog is trotting around inside the house and they hope that is what set off the alarm.
Don’t you think you should start running again?
She hears : You are getting fat and I think it is because you are not getting enough exercise. Pick up two more kilo’s and I am out of here.
Why does this question irritate women?
It makes them feel that they are being prescribed to in how they should look, what they should wear in order to be found acceptable. Men just don’t understand that many women deal with baby blues or the difficult boss by eating a second slice of chocolate cake, followed by a cream caramel delight, rum ‘n raisin ice cream and rounded off with a sweetie pie.
What’s for supper?
She hears: Your place is in the kitchen. I don’t care if your work a full day like I do, supper is your responsibility and I am hungry.
Why does this question irritate women?
It makes them feel as if the bulk of the household responsibilities is still theirs, even if they work fulltime or earn more than their husbands. Especially if they shopped for the food, cooked yesterday and put three loads of washing through the machine in the last 24 hours.
What was your previous boyfriend like?
She hears: I don’t like the thought of your being with anyone else, even if I didn’t know you then. I really want to hear that he was a right royal jerk, useless in bed, couldn’t hold down a job and generally disliked by all your family and friends.
Why does this question irritate women?
It makes them feel cornered – previous boyfriends are actually private territory and have nothing to do with present relationships. When women are hesitant to discuss previous relationships, men often react as if they are somehow being excluded and as if the woman has something to hide. We all have secrets and private things about which we don’t talk to anyone.
Who was that you were talking to?
She hears: I don’t trust you. I don’t like you talking to other men. You’re mine, mine, mine and don’t you forget it. How much did that smile really mean?
Why does this question irritate women? It makes them feel as if they are being treated like possessions and not human beings. Everyone needs friends and women certainly do not want to sleep with every man they smile at. Heavens, that would include the 72-year-old butcher on the corner.

Yuvaraj Singh Cancer

Cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy in the United States, local media reported on Sunday.

While Singh's mother was not available for comments, his father Yograj Singh did not answer to calls from Reuters.

Television channels quoted Delhi-based physiotherapist Jatin Chaudhary as saying Singh's lung tumour, diagnosed initially as non-malignant last year, was cancerous but fully curable.

The 30-year-old Punjab southpaw, architect of India's 2011 World Cup victory, recently denied undergoing surgery, insisting he was on medication for the ailment without disclosing its exact nature.

In a January 27 tweet, Singh said he was reading Lance Armstrong's 2000 autobiography "It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life".

"I'm sure it will motivate me and pull me throu(gh) this time! Livestrong Yuvstrong!" he tweeted.

American road racing cyclist Armstrong is arguably international sports' best known cancer survivor who went on to win a record seven Tour de France titles.

South African Dave Callaghan and Australian Simon O'Donnell also recovered from cancer to resume their cricket career.

So would Yuvraj, the Gujarat chief minister hoped.

"Sad to hear about ill-health of Yuvraj Singh. He is a fighter and am sure he'll come out of it very soon and play again for India," Narendra Modi

wrote on his Twitter page.

Modi's Jammu and Kashmir counterpart, Omar Abdullah, also wished Yuvraj a speedy and complete recovery.

"On a good day, there are few cricketers more exciting than him," he wrote on Twitter.

To Protect Hair Fall

We have about 100,000 hairs on our heads. Each hair shaft has three layers, with the cuticle, or outside layer, protecting the two inner layers.

Shiny hair is a sign of health because the layers of the cuticle lie flat and reflect light. When the scales of the cuticle lie flat they overlap tightly, so the inner layers are well protected from heat, sun, chlorine, and all the other hazards that can come from living in our environment.

When hair is damaged, though, the scales may separate and hair can become dry. Because the scales on dry hair don't protect the inner two layers as well, hair can break and look dull.

The type of hair a person has — whether it's straight or curly — can also affect how shiny it is. Sebum, which is the natural oil on the hair, covers straight hair better than curly hair, which is why straight hair can appear shinier.

Depending how long a person's hair is or how fast it grows, the end of each hair shaft can be a couple of years old. So the hair at the end of the shaft could have survived a few summers of scorching sun and saltwater and winters of cold, dry air. How well you care for your hair from the time it emerges from the root plays a role in how healthy it looks.

Caring for Hair
How you take care of your hair depends on the type of hair you have, your lifestyle, and how you style your hair.

Your hair type. People with dry, curly hair have different hair care needs than people with straight, fine hair. But all hair needs to be treated gently, especially when it's wet. Wet hair can stretch, making it more vulnerable to breakage or cuticle damage. That's why using a hot blow-dryer (or other heat styling products) on very wet hair can damage it. Long, high heat causes bubbles to form in the hair shaft, which causes them to break easily.

Some people find that their hair gets oily in their teen years. That's because the hair follicles contain sebaceous glands that make sebum, which moisturizes the hair and skin. During adolescence, the sebaceous glands may become overactive due to hormone changes during puberty, producing more oil than needed. As with acne, oily hair is usually a temporary part of puberty.

Many teens care for oily hair by washing it once a day — or more if they're active. As long as you treat your hair gently when it's wet, frequent washing shouldn't harm it. If you have acne, it's a good idea to keep the hair around your face clean so hair oils don't clog your pores.

If you're washing your hair every day or more, it may be better to choose a mild shampoo instead of a shampoo designed for oily hair. For some people — especially people with fine, fragile, or combination hair (hair that's oily at the crown but dry on the ends) — shampoos for oily hair can be too harsh. If you have oily hair and want to use a conditioner, choose one that's made for oily hair.

If your hair is dry, it's a good idea to wash it less frequently. Some people only need to wash their hair once a week — and that's fine. Many people who have curly hair also have dry hair. Curly and dry hair types are usually more fragile than straight hair, so you'll need to be especially careful about using heat styling products. Shampoos made for dry hair and hair conditioners can help.

Your activity level and interests.
Do you play sports or spend a lot of time at the beach? These kinds of things can affect your hair. For example, if you're an athlete with oily hair, you may want to wash your hair after working up a sweat during practice and games. But if you're a lifeguard or a swimmer, sun and saltwater (or the chlorine in pool water) can dry your hair out, no matter what your hair type. If you're exposed to sun, wind, or other elements, you may want to use a shampoo designed for dry hair or use a conditioner. It's also a good idea to wear a hat to protect your hair when you're outdoors.

Your hairstyle.
Heat styling products like curling and straightening irons can dry out even oily hair if they're used too much. Follow the instructions carefully, and don't use them on wet hair or high settings, and give your hair a vacation from styling once in a while. Ask your hair stylist or dermatologist for advice on using heat styling products.

Chemical treatments can also harm hair if they're not used properly. If you decide you want a chemical treatment to color, straighten, or curl your hair, it's best to trust the job to professionals. Stylists who are trained in applying chemicals to hair will be able to evaluate your hair type and decide which chemicals will work best for you.

Here are some things to be aware of when getting chemical treatments:

Relaxers. Relaxers (straighteners) work by breaking chemical bonds in curly hair. Relaxers containing lye can cause skin irritation and hair breakage. Although "no lye" relaxers may cause less irritation, both types of relaxers can cause problems if they are used in the wrong way (for example, if they're mixed incorrectly or left on the hair for too long). Scratching, brushing, or combing your hair right before a chemical relaxing treatment can increase these risks. And don't use relaxers — or any hair treatment — if your scalp is irritated.

If you decide to keep straightening your hair, you'll need to wait at least 6 weeks before your next treatment to protect your hair. Relaxers can cause hair breakage when used over a period of time, even when they're used properly. Using blow-dryers, curling or straightening irons, or color on chemically relaxed hair can also increase the risk of damage.
Perms. Perms take straight hair and make it curly. The risks are similar to those associated with relaxers.
Color. There are two types of color: permanent (which means the color stays in your hair until it grows out) and semi-permanent (the color washes out after a while). Some semi-permanent coloring treatments, like henna, are fairly safe and easy to use at home. Some people get a condition called contact dermatitis (an allergic reaction with a rash) from henna and other "natural" products, so be sure to test a small area first.
Other color treatments — especially permanent treatments — can cause hair loss, burning, redness, and irritation. A few types of coloring treatments can cause allergic reactions in certain people, and in rare cases these can be very serious. So talk to your stylist if you are worried that you may be sensitive to the products. Also, talk to your stylist about doing a patch test before using a product. And never use hair dyes on your eyelashes or eyebrows.

Regular haircuts are one of the best ways to help keep hair healthy. Even if you have long hair or you're trying to grow your hair, a haircut can help protect the ends of your hair from splitting and damage. In fact, cutting may actually help your hair grow better because it's healthy and not breaking off.

Valentine's Day Special-Eros (God of Love)

In Greek religion, god of love. In the Theogony of Hesiod (fl. 700 BCE), Eros was a primeval god, son of Chaos, the original primeval emptiness of the universe, but later tradition made him the son of Aphrodite, goddess of sexual love and beauty, by either Zeus (the king of the gods), Ares (god of war and of battle), or Hermes (divine messenger of the gods). Eros was a god not simply of passion but also of fertility. His brother was Anteros, the god of mutual love, who was sometimes described as his opponent. The chief associates of Eros were Pothos and Himeros (Longing and Desire). Later writers assumed the existence of a number of Erotes (like the several versions of the Roman Amor). In Alexandrian poetry he degenerated into a mischievous child. In Archaic art he was represented as a beautiful winged youth but tended to be made younger and younger until, by the Hellenistic period, he was an infant. His chief cult centre was at Thespiae in Boeotia, where the Erotidia were celebrated. He also shared a sanctuary with Aphrodite on the north wall of the Acropolis at Athens.

According to tradition, the first Yom Kippur took place after the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and arrival at Mount Sinai, where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Descending from the mountain, Moses caught his people worshiping a golden calf and shattered the sacred tablets in anger. Because the Israelites atoned for their idolatry, God forgave their sins and offered Moses a second set of tablets.

Jewish texts recount that during biblical times Yom Kippur was the only day on which the high priest could enter the inner sanctum of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. There, he would perform a series of rituals and sprinkle blood from sacrificed animals on the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the Ten Commandments. Through this complex ceremony he made atonement and asked for God’s forgiveness on behalf of all the people of Israel. The tradition is said to have continued until the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D; it was then adapted into a service for rabbis and their congregations in individual synagogues.

According to tradition, God judges all creatures during the 10 Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, deciding whether they will live or die in the coming year. Jewish law teaches that God inscribes the names of the righteous in the “book of life” and condemns the wicked to death on Rosh Hashanah; people who fall between the two categories have until Yom Kippur to perform “teshuvah,” or repentance. As a result, observant Jews consider Yom Kippur and the days leading up to it a time for prayer, good deeds, reflecting on past mistakes and making amends with others.

Observing Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur is Judaism’s most sacred day of the year; it is sometimes referred to as the “Sabbath of Sabbaths.” For this reason, even Jews who do not observe other traditions refrain from work, which is forbidden during the holiday, and participate in religious services on Yom Kippur, causing synagogue attendance to soar. Some congregations rent out additional space to accommodate large numbers of worshippers.

The Torah commands all Jewish adults (apart from the sick, the elderly and women who have just given birth) to abstain from eating and drinking between sundown on the evening before Yom Kippur and nightfall the next day. The fast is believed to cleanse the body and spirit, not to serve as a punishment. Religious Jews heed additional restrictions on bathing, washing, using cosmetics, wearing leather shoes and sexual relations. These prohibitions are intended to prevent worshippers from focusing on material possessions and superficial comforts.

Because the High Holy Day prayer services include special liturgical texts, songs and customs, rabbis and their congregations read from a special prayer book known as the machzor during both Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. Five distinct prayer services take place on Yom Kippur, the first on the eve of the holiday and the last before sunset on the following day. One of the most important prayers specific to Yom Kippur describes the atonement ritual performed by high priests during ancient times. The blowing of the shofar—a trumpet made from a ram’s horn—is an essential and emblematic part of both High Holy Days. On Yom Kippur, a single long blast is sounded at the end of the final service to mark the conclusion of the fast.

Traditions and Symbols of Yom Kippur
Pre-Yom Kippur feast: On the eve of Yom Kippur, families and friends gather for a bountiful feast that must be finished before sunset. The idea is to gather strength for 25 hours of fasting.

Breaking of the fast: After the final Yom Kippur service, many people return home for a festive meal. It traditionally consists of breakfast-like comfort foods such as blintzes, noodle pudding and baked goods.

Wearing white: It is customary for religious Jews to dress in white—a symbol of purity—on Yom Kippur. Some married men wear kittels, which are white burial shrouds, to signify repentance.

Charity: Some Jews make donations or volunteer their time in the days leading up to Yom Kippur. This is seen as a way to atone and seek God’s forgiveness. One ancient custom known as kapparot involves swinging a live chicken or bundle of coins over one’s head while reciting a prayer. The chicken or money is then given to the poor.

Zeus

In ancient Greek religion, chief deity of the pantheon, a sky and weather god who was identical with the Roman god Jupiter. His name clearly comes from that of the sky god Dyaus of the ancient Hindu Rigveda. Zeus was regarded as the sender of thunder and lightning, rain, and winds, and his traditional weapon was the thunderbolt. He was called the father (i.e., the ruler and protector) of both gods and men.

According to a Cretan myth that was later adopted by the Greeks, Cronus, king of the Titans, upon learning that one of his children was fated to dethrone him, swallowed his children as soon as they were born. But Rhea, his wife, saved the infant Zeus by substituting a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes for Cronus to swallow and hiding Zeus in a cave on Crete. There he was nursed by the nymph (or female goat) Amalthaea and guarded by the Curetes (young warriors), who clashed their weapons to disguise the baby's cries. After Zeus grew to manhood he led a revolt against the Titans and succeeded in dethroning Cronus, perhaps with the assistance of his brothers Hades and Poseidon, with whom he then divided dominion over the world.

As ruler of heaven Zeus led the gods to victory against the Giants (offspring of Gaea and Tartarus) and successfully crushed several revolts against him by his fellow gods. According to the Greek poet Homer, heaven was located on the summit of Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece and the logical home for a weather god. The other members of the pantheon resided there with Zeus and were subject to his will. From his exalted position atop Mount Olympus Zeus was thought to omnisciently observe the affairs of men, seeing everything, governing all, and rewarding good conduct and punishing evil. Besides dispensing justice—he had a strong connection with his daughter Dike (Justice)—Zeus was the protector of cities, the home, property, strangers, guests, and supplicants.

Zeus was well known for his amorousness—a source of perpetual discord with his wife, Hera—and he had many love affairs with both mortal and immortal women. In order to achieve his amorous designs, Zeus frequently assumed animal forms, such as that of a cuckoo when he ravished Hera, a swan when he ravished Leda, or a bull when he carried off Europa. Notable among his offspring were the twins Apollo and Artemis, by the Titaness Leto; Helen and the Dioscuri, by Leda of Sparta; Persephone, by the goddess Demeter; Athena, born from his head after he had swallowed the Titaness Metis; Hephaestus, Hebe, Ares, and Eileithyia, by his wife, Hera; Dionysus, by the goddess Semele; and many others.

Though regarded by Greek religionists everywhere as omnipotent and the head of the pantheon, Zeus's very universality tended to reduce his importance compared to that of powerful local divinities like Athena and Hera. Although statues of Zeus Herkeios (Guardian of the House) and altars of Zeus Xenios (Hospitable) graced the forecourts of houses, and though his mountaintop shrines were visited by pilgrims, Zeus did not have a temple at Athens until the late 6th century BC, and even his temple at Olympia postdated that of Hera.

In art Zeus was represented as a bearded, dignified, and mature man of stalwart build; his most prominent symbols were the thunderbolt and the eagle.
